Big Wheel Keep on Turnin’

John Fogerty and Credence Clearwater Revival sang it best:

“Left a good job in the city,

Working for the man every night and day

And I never lost a minute of sleepin’

Worryin’ about the way things might have been

Big Wheel keep on turnin’

Proud Mary keep on burnin’

Rollin’ …rollin’…. rollin’ on the river”

You know how it feels. You leave the yard with a big load of lumber on your flat deck and head out into the city, working your way through all the lurches and lunges of everyday traffic – just hoping you don’t zig when one of those crazy ‘civilians’ takes a ‘zag’ in their vehicles.

You are now running a business, but you still love to drive. You got tired of working for someone else –every day and every night. And you decided you wanted to run your own gig.

You got your wife to lend a hand with the books, your mother comes by to help her out with your kids. You and your two brothers hooked up with a couple of owner- operators and now you got a 5 truck operation handling 2 big shippers and a few small ones.

It’s been a year now and you don’t get out as much but still you like feel of the ‘big rig’ out on the open road, outside all the lights and all that traffic. You like the feel of it rollin’ down the highway.

And now you have a clear mind to think. Think about that big new deal that your biggest customer is now getting with their customer. It means you have to be ready to add another 6 trucks to your operations – and you wonder if you are ready. You wonder if you have the equipment and staff to take their loads to destinations and places where they need to go. You worry that it may just be a tad too far- too much of a stretch for your operation.

You consider leasing more equipment and hiring more drivers. You consider finding more owner-operators. You think about opening up a brokerage operation so you can still keep the primary relationship with your customer. You think about doing both.

Something for you to ponder as you’re rollin.’ It’s a worry, but you realize that it’s a good bother to have. After all, the opposite is having no customers and staff and equipment sitting around.

Still it feels good to be rollin’, the truck is rollin’ and business is now rollin’. It’s got momentum. Something you and your entire family can take pride in.

And you knew that this time would come.

You knew that those excel spreadsheets that your wife is now struggling to manage, the cluttered whiteboard on the wall, and all those post it notes on desks and computers can no longer keep things together. What if you get notice of an audit?

Yet it’s still good to be rollin’…rollin’ down the river.

But at the next rest stop you decide it’s time, it’s time to make the call.

You know it’s time now to look for trucking software or brokerage software, or hopefully a solution that combines both trucking software and brokerage software together – so you can bring all this disparate information together into one complete system.

And you want something online- something that is Software as a Service. Something that ties into your monthly cycle of business -something that ties into the rolling momentum of your business- a business rolling and breaking through to the next level.

You make the call and you find you can get things up and running in less than 48 hours, and you can get online training and support for your staff so you don’t have to do it all yourself. After all, your love driving.

After your walk around, you head out of the rest stop, moving down the interstate and miles down the road, as you take it from 10 to 11 to the 12 gear……you are rolling…….. rollin’……….rollin’………..rollin’ on the river.

Big Wheel keep on turnin’.
